Lincoln
January 28, 2013With that Lincoln movie up for an Oscar this year, it got me thinking about all the sketches I’ve done of Lincoln over the years. He was kind of an odd looking guy with that long gaunt face and weird beard, which makes him very fun to draw. Lucky for me, there seems to be more statues of him around than anyone else in history. So whenever I come across one, I sketch it.
In the first Mt. Rushmore sketch, you’ve added some humor, I see. The visitors are annoyed, and somehow the statues seem to know it, reflecting different emotional responses to their unhappy customers.
It gives the scene more of the negative tone of the moment in a subtle way. One doesn’t usually look for emotion on the well-known mountain, but in sketches, unlike photography, you can get the moment accross that way without betraying the truth of that medium, since sketching doesn’t have to be that representative.
Nice comment, thank you!
